Fennel, a member of the Apiaceae family, is related to cumin, dill, caraway, and anise. Native to southern Europe, it’s now naturalized in northern Europe, Australia, and North America, and is cultivated globally. Most fennel seeds in the U.S. are imported from Egypt.

Fennel has a long history of use in medicine, magic, and cooking. Its aromatic, sweet seeds have a flavor similar to anise. The vegetable form, Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, is sometimes mistakenly called anise due to its similar taste to true anise (Pimpinella anisum).
